Fumed Silica Function – Thickening Properties
Fumed silica is a nano chemical material that can exhibit thickening effects when added to liquids.
It appears as an extremely fluffy white powder, But under microscopic, it exhibits a three-dimensional branched structure with a large number of silanol groups on its surface.
The silanol groups allow for the formation of hydrogen bonds between colloidal silica particles creating a three-dimensional network structure, Similarly, the silanol groups can interact with polar liquids or polymer materials through hydrogen bonding
This three-dimensional network structure brings good thickening properties to the liquid system products. It is manifested by an increase in viscosity and a decrease in flow ability.
The thickening properties of fumed silica allows it to be widely applied in silicone rubber, coatings, inks, adhesives and sealants, personal care products, and unsaturated polyester resins
