How To Test the Silica Content of Fumed Silica

Silica content is an important indicator of the purity or quality of fumed silica, Now HIFULL will show you how to test.

First, weigh the platinum crucible to a constant weight (m0)
Then, take a 1gram sample of dried fumed silica and accurately weigh it (m1)
Place the platinum crucible containing the fumed silica in a high-temperature furnace and ignite it to constant weight
Take it out and cool it to room temperature in a desiccator, weigh it (m2)
Wet the sample in the platinum crucible with some water
Add in a certain amount of sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid
Steam it into mush on an infrared evaporator
Cool it, and wash the inner wall with water
then add some hydrofluoric acid and steam it until it’s dry
Place the sample in a high-temperature furnace when no white smoke is generated
Ignite it at 1000℃ for 30 minutes /
Take it out and cool it in a desiccator
Weigh it (m3).

Finally, we can calculate the mass fraction of fumed silica from the above data by the calculation formula
Repeat above steps
Calculate the average of the two results. In this way, we get the silica content figure,

Pyrohydrolysi & Trichloromethylsilane
