Fumed Silica For Architecture Coatings | China
Project details
- Application: Architecture Coatings
- Location: Beijing, China
- Problem: This coating factory is expecting strong hydrophobicity performance of the surface coating to achieve self-cleaning effect. They have already tried international brands A R202 & R972, but the water-repellent performance does not live up to their expectation, and the surface is also slightly whitish, not transparent enough. This coating factory found us for fumed silica with better hydrophobicity as a substitute.
Functions of fumed silica in Architecture Coatings
HIFULL® hydrophobic fumed silica is surface-modified silica, of which the surface hydroxyl group (-OH) is reacted or shielded by the siloxyl group (-Si(CH3)2-O-). With its unique surface nanostructure, hydrophobic fumed silica reduces the adhesion of water droplets on the coating surface, and enlarges the contact angle of the coating surface, resulting in good hydrophobic performance. Another theory is described as the Lotus Leaf Effect or ball-bearing action, which improves self-cleaning performance.
Solution
This client is making oil-based acrylic coating. Our technical person recommends HIFULL HB-132 for them, which is produced by hydrophilic fumed silica with a specific surface area of 200 m2/g after chemical post-treatment of HMDS (Hexamethyldisilazane).
HIFULL HB-132 can be dispersed in solvent or oil, it’s nonpolar product with low moisture tendency and high hydrophobicity.

Client Feedback
This client replaced the international brand product with HIFULL HB-132. With great performance in hydrophobicity, self-cleaning and transparency, this coating factory is satisfied with HIFULL fumed silica product. Now they are testing the weathering ability, once passed, will replace and use our HIFULL HB-132.
