Defoamer is an important industrial additive that has been widely used in textile production, papermaking, petroleum, food, pharmaceutical industries and other fields. It plays an indispensable role despite lower usage amount. Defoamers can be roughly divided into two categories, non-silicone and silicon-based defoamers. Silicon-based defoamers, which are mainly composed of silicone oils or fumed silica, silicone ointments and modified silicone oils, are currently the most widely used and most effective defoamers.
Defoaming effect and storage stability (especially the stability of silicone-containing paste emulsion) are two important indicators for measuring the quality of emulsion-type silicone oil defoamer. Emulsion stability can be affected by many factors, including the particle size and viscosity of the emulsion, and emulsion particle size is the most important control indicator for emulsion defoamer (generally required to be less than 10um) which is determined by factors including choice of emulsifier, emulsification process and particle size.
As an extremely re-fined amorphous inorganic nanomaterial that is obtained through the hydrolytic condensation of halogenated silane in high temperature oxyhydrogen flame, fumed silica boasts a primary particle size in the range of 7-40nm.  After entering the foaming liquid, silicone emulsion containing silica soot generates a very high amount of particles of extremely small size, which work as basic defoaming units to achieve the best defoaming effect. At the same time, by virtue of small particle size, large specific surface area and stable hydrogen bonded three-dimensional network structure, fumed silica particles can be evenly and stably distributed throughout the system, which is conductive to maintaining the storage stability of the system. Therefore, fumed silica is a very good thickening and anti-settling agent for defoamers (it is generally recommended to use fumed silicas with a specific surface area of 200-300m2/g.). In summary, as a defoaming active substance added to silicone oil-based defoaming agents, silicone ointment with silica soot plays a very important role in highly efficient compounding and synergistic effect, which helps greatly improve the defoaming efficiency of silicone oils.
